“Your face is melting like fuckin cheese/
your ass sweet is like fuckin BEES!!!!”—A rapper in a battle who is feelin his punchline a little too much even though it’s weak and does not deserve the fury expressed in his voice
So, I am at home right now when I should be at work. Why, you say? Because I thought today, Columbus Day, was a federal holiday and everybody had the day off. Apparently not. Not that I like the idea of honoring Christopher Columbus for anything at all - but a day off is a day off, right? I am particularly irritated with the “anti-Columbus” ideology that attacks the administration for observing the holiday that gives us a day off.
Last year my school had this day off. And last year a group of idiot students protested the day (by what? going to work/school?) that we, as an institution, should not observe such a holiday for it’s honoring a horrible man who murdered the Native Americans, stole their land, raped their women and pillaged their homes. And this year - we don’t observe the holiday. Hooray, right? No.
Though my stance is that the point isn’t to not celebrate Christopher Columbus Day. The point is to observe and honor the real heroes in the story - the Native Americans. Declare this day a federal Native American Day and stop shining the spotlight on Columbus and give the attention and respect to where it really needs to be. Not enough people in America even understand whose soil they are living on.
The solution is to stop celebrating Columbus and start celebrating the Native American people. And still get our damn day off.
I thought today would be one of those worth-blogging-for type of days just because it was an enjoyable, productive day. This morning got up, had morning pillow talk with the boy, and set out for our days. Mines consisted of buying textbooks (which, while productive, was the least enjoyable of my day), work (in which I finished a campus event poster in 2 hours tops!), a surprise lunch with the boy at Rancho Bravo (which, by the way, is BOMB), more work (which was quite fun with office visitors, new coworkers and good events for the campus brewing), a scholarship awards ceremony, my communications class from 6-8:30pm, late night dinner eats with Celeste, homework, and now chillin chillin chillin. Man, today I didn’t even have to use my AK. I gotta say, today was a good day.
